Poor air quality can make your home feel unpleasant. It can affect your breathing, your sleep, and even
your health. But luckily, there are things you can do to tackle this problem and improve the air quality in
your home.

Houseplants

We spend a whole lot of time indoors breathing in stale or sometimes polluted air. But keeping lots of
beautiful house plants around the place can significantly boost oxygen and also help to clean up some
of those toxins that find their way into our homes. As well as improving air quality, plants can lower your
stress levels and make you feel calmer. Plus, they add beauty and character to your living space!
Which plants should you go for? Dracaena, Peace Lily, Snake plant, and Aloe Vera are
all popular choices.

Fix a damp problem

A moisture issue in your home can cause structural damage to your property, can affect your soft
furnishings, and can even affect your health. If you’ve got a damp problem, it’s vital you address it
promptly. Draw humidity out of the air with a dehumidifier. Proper ventilation is also crucial, so be sure to
open windows whenever possible. Try to prevent dampness from worsening, too. Keep a lid on pots of boiling water while cooking, and be sure to open the window after a hot shower to let the steam out.
Strong extractor fans in the kitchen and bathroom should also help.

Good ventilation

If your home has poor air quality, you want to make sure there’s plenty of fresh air circulated. When the
weather is warm, consider leaving the windows open when you’re home. A bug screen might be useful
to allow a breeze without letting in little critters. Another great way to get air circulating is to install a
ceiling fan. In the winter, this will help to distribute the warm air that rises to the ceiling, making your
heating more efficient. In the summer, it will help to circulate cold, fresh air around the home.
A table-mounted fan is also a good option, especially when the window is open.

Air conditioning

A faulty air conditioning unit can actually worsen air quality issues. This is particularly true if the filters
are broken, as the unit will be circulating dirty air from outside your home. There’s often no need to
replace your AC unit if it can be repaired. HVAC repair will keep your unit working well for longer.
However, if your unit has come to the end of its life, investing in a new one will be a wise choice. This is
because many more modern units are much more energy-efficient, and will save you money in the long run.

Use eco-friendly products

Many cleaning products commonly used around the home contain toxic chemicals that can irritate our
skin and our respiratory systems. If you’re concerned about air quality, try sticking to cleaning and
products without a strong scent. You might find it’s best to go for eco-friendly or more natural products
to avoid unhealthy fumes.
